Match Point provides after school educational services and tennis instruction for “at risk” youth in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades who primarily attend Franklin Elementary School. This successful program now entering its 15th year. Match Point Director Ferenc Hodosy organizes the program which includes an after school academic tutorial and fun and high energy tennis clinic for 65 students from Franklin School at the Municipal Tennis Courts. We hope to expand to more city
schools.
This program is important not only for the fact that it provides a venue for educational assistance and physical activity, but for the mentorship and guidance that Match Point staff provide through the life lessons learned by participating in tennis. Opening young eyes to the opportunities of education, self-improvement, and goal-setting in a “team” building activity creates tools for the children to deal with critical issues facing the child at this “point” in life. Program Director, Ferenc Hodosy, views each point in the game of life and tennis as a critical juncture in which the outcome of the game (life) is formulated. Match Point Programs purpose incorporates this concept: to provide commitment and goal setting through education and physical activity, while emphasizing respect for the game and others. All of this is done in a fun and supportive environment which provides each child a sense of opportunity and a growth for potential.
Match Point was established over 15 years ago and is supported by the Santa Barbara Tennis Patrons, Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation, the United States Tennis Association’s NJTL program and SCTA. The Ed Doty Fund, Stephan Hahn Foundation and other private donors have also contributed to this program financially. The Family Cup Challenge Tennis Tournament was started 3 years ago as a key fundraiser for the program. It is a parent/child, husband/wife and siblings tournament that is scheduled for April 19-20.
